The first iteration of Testbeds is planned for the Edgemere Coalition Community Garden in Edgemere, Queens. Designated as an Open Space in the Edgemere Urban Renewal Plan in 2016 and a Community Garden in 2018, ECCG is currently being built out, planted, and used incrementally. We were introduced to this garden by GreenThumb and have been lucky to develop the project with the gardeners since. Pending funding, we hope to complete the project during the 2020 gardening season.

For this pilot, we have received a mockup donated by developer Cape Advisors, built to test their custom concrete facade panels for a new condo building, 30 Warren, set to open this summer in Tribeca.

The mockup, which was used at the condo’s showroom, comprises four custom concrete panels and a large, 8-by-5 foot window. Currently, we plan to use the assembly to frame a new community room at the ECCG.

Through the mockup, the garden shares a surface with a condo in lower Manhattan, linking the disparate parts of the city through built fragments.

The window of the mockup looks on to a new community room, sitting under a large shade-producing roof and next to a new greenhouse and tool shed.
